Shilstone Stud is a small Morgan horse breeding farm in beautiful Northern Michigan.  Located just a few miles from the shores of Lake Michigan, near the picturesque village of Onekama (pronounced "Oh-neck-ah-ma").  A fancy show facility we are not, but we offer our equine friends a safe enviroment with plenty of affection and individual attention.

We strive to create horses that are not only beautiful to look at, but are a pleasure to spend time with.   A place that takes pride in breeding quality stock with a respected, honest reputation.

Our breeding stock is selected with many different criteria in mind, always taking the whole of the individual into account.  We believe that not all elements are equal and vigorously try to improve each foal crop.  Many factors play into our decisions for our breeding stock and we are proud of the end results.

Shilstone tries to produce horses that appeal to a wide range of people, from the show horse fancier to the family who is just looking for a horse to love and enjoy.  Disposition and trainability are of paramount importance to us, creating horses that make their owners happy and content.  The Morgan horse is noted for its kind and intelligent nature and that our job as "guardians of the breed" is to replicate this in our stock.

Proven bloodlines are carefully studied and blended to help us produce horses that we enjoy looking at and being around on a daily basis.  Our cornerstone is the highly prized Funquest herd, created by the late Stuart Hazard.  This carefully selected linebred genepool is known for outstanding dispositions, abundant Morgan type and character, athletic ability, beauty and versatility.   With this beginning we have began to outcross and experiment; carefully adding some more modern lines, while keeping the integrity of the foundation lines as well.

It is no accident that Shilstone has some of the most recognizeable World Champion bloodlines in our breeding herd.  A quick glance at our horse's pedigrees and you will see horses that have consistantly proven themselves in various events.  Horses that are the very essence of the Morgan breed.

Our horses lead a pretty priviledged life we think!  Each horse is handled daily to insure proper socialization and bonding with people.    A balanced feeding program is followed, including special nutritional needs for each horse to allow maximum growth and health.   Worming and farrier work is also closely monitored to help maintain proper developement and overall herd health.

Because we are a small operation, each horse is an individual and special to us.   With this in mind, we are particular about the homes our horses get; it is our responsibility to make sure they will be loved, appreciated and well cared for.   Every horse we sell is sold with an unconditional money back guarantee to help insure it is placed in the right home ---  we're not happy unless the horse and it's new owner is happy.

You are welcomed to come and vist us here at Shilstone.   There is much more to us then these few pages can reveal!   Please feel free to contact us for any reason, we would be happy to hear from you.

  • At Shilstone we believe that it is our responsibility to care and maintain our horses as we'd like to be cared for ourself.  They are dependant on us for their needs and welfare!

  • Basic conformation is far more important than any one exotic physical feature.  Balance is all parts being equal in proportion, all equally significant and necessary for extended soundness.

  • The Morgan horse is versatile as a breed, not that every horse within the breed has to be completely versatile.  Some horses are naturally going to excel in certain events and not be as proffecient in others.

  • We also believe that no one discipline is superior to any other.  We do not think that a good Park horse is any more superior then a good Working Stock horse.  All horses, regardless of their discipline should be appreciated and respected.

  • That good horses need not be outrageously expensive.  We take pride in selling honest horses at honest prices.

  • All Morgan horses should be easily recognized as a Morgan horse!

  • Horses deserve their own free time, to feel the warmth of the sun and the scratching of a fellow companion.  Our horses are well socialized and are allowed down time to just be themselves.

  • No ribbon or award is worth sacrificing a horse's mental or physical soundness.  Each individual will tell you how far they can go.  We must respect their limitations, just as we ourselves have our own limitations.
